New Year

In the last evening of the year, we eat a bowl of buckwheat noodle, Soba. This is just an ordinally bowl of soba, but is called with a special name 'Toshi-koshi soba'. Toshi-koshi means going passed the line between the old year and the new year. Why do we do this? Well, no definate reason is known, apparently, just like many other old things. But some say that it is for a practical reason. Soba is easy to digest. Around the New Year, there is a lot of feast. Especially in the old days, people used to visit each other for the New Years greeting. That means a lot of heavy eating in a few days. Plain, light meal of soba prepares your stomach for the big event.

This bowl has wakame seaweed, green onion and fish cake. The green thing on the side is the home-made seasoning made from citron peel and hot green pepper and salt.
