And some more shots of the town. This town is located inconveniently from big cities around. It was quite isoclated until recently, so in case of disaster which closes the railway, there was not many other passage to the outside world. Now there is a highway which leads to other towns. They hoped that it helpes keep their young population to stay and visitors to increase, but it may not be necessarily working out as such. As with every other town, more cars, more large scale suburban stores, less young people and more old people are to be seen here, too.

The importance of them were nearly forgotten by the locals in modern days, but it was recognized by the outsiders as the World Heritage. It is quite a big deal, in fact, and surprised the locals very much. The town officials urgently formed a committie to dust up the town, find out what it is that appeals to theoutsiders so much, and somehow preserve them.

It came a little too late to keep the town like a historical museum, but it is still a charming old small town. Narrow and winding streets, stone walls, temples and shrines, bamboo forest... and of course, truely beautifl hiking experiences on the World Heritage stone paved paths are available. If you want to experience how life used to be in Japan, please take your time and visit this town. You will see the warmer, slower side of our culture in this remote place.
